Lately: A Random List

Well its been ages since I've posted. Or 13 days, but you know what I mean. I thought I'd post a little update on what I've been up to. Lots of randomness headed your way...

We had an amazing time in Crater Lake a couple of weekends ago. Being mostly away from internet and cell reception is SUCH a nice break, and that's really what started my evening avoidance of all things technology, which has led to this little blog break. Isn't it the bluest lake you've ever seen?

Random fact, but Crater Lake is the deepest lake in the US. And Lake Tahoe, where I'll be next weekend, comes in at number 2. Guess what #3 is! It's Lake Chelan, where I spend almost every other weekend, including last weekend. August is apparently the month of the deep lakes, which I kind of love, as unintentional as it was!

Speaking of Tahoe, I'm going for a bachelorette party, and so I HAD to pick up some fun pool/lake floats to take - I got the gummy bear, the pineapple, and the pizza! I can't wait to pull them out for an afternoon of lounging at the lake! I've been rocking my one-piece swimsuits almost all summer long (I have 2 that I love) and it is making me want to invest in another one for Tahoe. Any favorites from the ones that Shopbop carries?? I have a long torso...any brands that work better for that?

Other things that have kept me away? House progress is coming along, and of course I decided to take on a little project of my own during the remodel: painting all of the kitchen cabinets! So far I've removed them all, taken hardware off, sanded using coarse paper, sanded using finer paper, and now I've got priming and painting and reinstalling left to go. We're going to go with a light gray paint on the cabinets, a white+gray marbled quartz countertop, and oh yah did I mention we've decided to re-floor the kitchen too? Nope, I didn't. But scope creep is real, you guys, and this project just keeps getting more and more awesome (and more and more expensive!). But I'm SO excited. Don't forget that snapchat (@bmarie35) is the best place to keep track of the progress, if you're interested!

(Winosaur tank found here.)

The animals come home for good tonight (except for when we all have to leave for our hardwood refinishing) and I can't wait to make them love me again. I mean, Niko hasn't stopped, but this is the greeting I got from Amos last time I saw him in Lake Chelan (he's terrifying!) so I'm thinking maybe this time he's going to finally kill us in our sleep.

Other than that, I've been living in a chaos zone and just simply haven't been taking outfit photos. We'll see how that goes once we move upstairs into a beautiful finished "new" house, but between now and then...I'm guessing posting is going to be a little sporadic. Favorite blogs to read while you aren't reading mine? Franish, of course. Something Good Blog. Anne In Residence. Writes Like a Girl. And so many others. I'll do a more extensive round-up of my every day reads if that's something you'd like? Let me know in the comments!

Currently: August

I just really love this link-up that Anne does, and I love it even more this month since she's co-hosting with Dana, another favorite! So here's what is currently going on in my world.

Hearting all the pregnant ladies and new babies in my life right now. It is so fun to have friends who are growing and then raising tiny little humans - I can't wait for all of the tips they'll have to share with me when Travis and I get around to starting our own (non-fur) family.

Watching a gazillion (but still never enough) snaps from my mom of my animals. We are SO SO SO SO lucky that my parents have been so helpful this summer with our cat and dog during this construction, but we miss them SO much. Luckily my mom sends me videos and pictures every day of what they are up to, and I couldn't be happier!

Exploring Crater Lake for the first time this weekend! We're headed down on Friday and I couldn't be more excited!

Creating a new home. Or at least, that's basically what it feels like. Travis and I are having so many awesome discussions of what we plan to fill our new space with, and as the days get closer to completion, we're making more and more decisions.

Eating Trader Joe's food! Travis and I decided to do our weekly grocery shopping there this week instead of at our normal store, and it is such a nice change! I shopped almost exclusively at TJ's when I was in college, so it has been fun to pick up some of my old favorites and also try a bunch of new-to-me things, like their Cowboy Bark, which is the best little dessert after dinner!

Nordstrom Sale Reviews (Keep vs. Return)

Alright, so I've gotten my Nordstrom orders (well, most of them) and I've gone through and decided what I'm keeping and what I'm returning, so I thought I'd do a quick little recap here!

First up, you should check out this post which outlines what I bought. Then, see how I liked it (or didn't) here:

 photo IMG_8637-2_zpstugfbins.jpg

Okay, so I love this shirt in the pictures. Like, love love. It's only $40 now while on the sale, and will go up to $68 after, which is a phenomenal deal. BUT its just a tad sheer. I don't want to have to wear a tank under it. But gosh the fit is perfect. Originally this was a definite RETURN but now I'm on the fence. Comment and let me know if all white shirts need tanks under. Maybe I have unreasonable expectations!

The pants are a KEEP. I love the fit and I need to branch out from skinny ankle slacks, so these are a great start. I may hem them to wear with flats, but I love them with wedges, so maybe not? They are $52 now and will be $79 after the sale.

The shoes are a KEEP as well. They are $70 now, and $110 after, which is more than I'd want to spend on flats usually, but the shade of blue is so beautiful and the fit is great.

 photo IMG_8638_zps4rksxdav.jpg

Now for another piece I'm not sure on. This shirt originally was a KEEP for me, but I haven't reached for it once. Maybe because it truly is more of a fall piece? I think I'll love it in the fall layered more than I'd love it on a hot day. So I do think it is a KEEP still at only $32 now ($48 after).

The pants are sadly going back. I really wanted to love them, but they are a RETURN. They are only $52 now and $78 after and have a beautiful pattern to them. If you aren't curvy, buy them. You'll love them. They have a bit of a higher waist and a great seam up the front. I'd love them if I had no hips, seriously.

 photo IMG_8640_zpsvuj05x64.jpg

Two more things I really wanted to love! This shirt was just TOO LONG in the back, so it is a RETURN. The pants were just...very fake feeling. I don't hate the way they look, but the swish when I walk and they are so plasticky. Not impressed. They are also a RETURN.

 photo IMG_8642_zpsfasgexln.jpg

I shared all of this on snapchat and explained how torn I was on this dress. And ALL OF YOU said to keep it. BUT it is a RETURN because I realized that a couple of years ago I kept a very similar dress from Le Tote and eventually got rid of it. So I am worried the same thing would happen with this dress, and at $105 ($158 after the sale), it just isn't worth it to me.

The shoes are also a RETURN because I just didn't love how light the nude was. But I've wanted to reach for them a couple of times, because I really do have a gap in my closet in this area. SO comment and let me know - should I keep them??? I haven't taken them back YET. They are $110, which makes me think I shouldn't keep them unless I *really* love them, but that also probably means they'll last a long time. Ugh, so torn.

I did go and place another favorite Natori bra, which I won't be reviewing here (it is amazing though!) and this cardigan, which is sadly totally sold out. I'll let you know what I think when it comes!

Trav & Bri, Recently - vol.57

 photo IMG_8656_zpsrlar1rkd.jpg

Recently at home
This week they worked on drywall! It's so crazy to see the walls up - makes the space feel so complete, even though we still have 6 or so weeks of work left to do! In this photo you're looking at the bathtub corner of the bathroom, and you can see the hole for the skylight up above and the window area out to the little back patio.

A recap of everything I got at the Nordstrom sale is in this post. I'll be sharing what I kept and what I returned later this week!

Recently styled
My bangs are finally long enough to put behind my ear *most* of the time. They sometimes fall out, but we're getting there, people!

Travis and I have continued our farmers markets dates! Here's our haul from Friday night, which we turned into a beautiful dinner later that night. Those peaches are the best peaches I've had in years! Just absolutely perfect.

We celebrated Niko's 1 year Adoptiversary / Gotcha Day on Friday. The Barkery food truck was at the dog park so Trav got him a bacon pupcake and he devoured that thing. What a year it has been with him in our lives!!

Nordstrom Sale Finds

I shopped the first day of the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale presale and came away with some great finds, so I wanted to highlight them here. I already wore a few pieces, and I may or may not be wearing the shoes again today...I'm pretty happy with them! I'm not totally sure what I'm keeping and what I'm returning yet, but I'll update with that once I do my July budget recap!

 photo IMG_8612_zpsuf4jppgx.jpg

Both this top and these shoes are from the sale. Top is from Wayf and I'm so in love with it. Booties are Lucky and are SO COMFORTABLE. I've been looking for shoes like this for a while but hated how uncomfortable they all were, and these are huge winners in that category. They are only $70 now and will go up to $120 post-sale.

 photo IMG_8618_zps4iuwah1i.jpg

I also tried to fill in my wardrobe gap of a white button down by ordering two - this BP tunic ($32 now, $48 after) and this Halogen one. It is only $40 now and goes up to $68 - gosh I love this sale! I also ordered this striped tee, but I'm not sold on it, so we'll see if I end up keeping it! For only $18, it might be worth it if its cute on.

 photo IMG_8617_zpsfqartesk.jpg

I tried to round out a few shoe gaps as well by ordering these flats in blue ($70 now, $110 later), these nude wedges ($110 now, $170 after), and these block heel sandals in black ($67 now, $100 after).

I also ordered a few pairs of pants - these black faux leather skinnies for $65 ($98 after), these ponte leggings for $52 ($78 after), and these slacks for $52 ($79 after).

Lastly, I ordered this dress in navy for $105 ($158 after) and this sweater in burgundy ($46 now to $69 after). I'll definitely be keeping the sweater, but I'm not sure I need the dress at the steep price of $105, even on sale.

Presale ends today and the sale opens up to everyone tomorrow through August 8.

Other items in this outfit: white jeans, sweater (borrowed from Mom's closet), wrap bracelet, earrings, open cuff bracelet

I'll be showing off the rest of my finds on snapchat throughout the weekend, so make sure to follow along (@bmarie35)!

Roadtrip Workwear

A few weeks ago, after the long 4th of July holiday weekend, I decided to stay in Lake Chelan with my family for an extra day before driving home, which meant that I'd be driving straight from Chelan to a meeting when I did finally make the trek over. Heading from 90 degree weather into a 3-hour drive to 65 degree weather at first posed a bit of a clothing challenge. But luckily I brought this outfit with me so that I could wear the blazer once I arrived in Seattle, but not until then.

Blazer: J. Crew  |  Tank: similar  |  Pants: Banana Republic (similar)  |  Flats: BP

 photo IMG_8377_zpst9xgdxii.jpg

Isn't it just the prettiest place? I can't get over the views from my parents place - and with the horses next door, it makes it feel more remote than it is, which I adore.

On a totally different note, have you hit up the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale yet?? I shopped on day one of presale and should be getting my packages today and Thursday, so I'll be putting up a post with my reviews - and on snapchat, too! Stay tuned :)

Master Bedroom (so far)

As we work through this remodel, we're spending basically every dime we have on the actual building. We plan to use all of our old furniture to start while slowly saving up to buy new furniture - with one exception: the master bedroom. Part of why we started this whole project was to get a dream master bedroom before having kids - a space with a king bed, an attached bathroom, and enough closet space to actually store our clothing. And as part of that, we need to furnish the room - with mostly new things!

We've made a few decisions already, but there are still a million more to be made, so I thought I'd ask some advice here! Here's what we know:

 photo masterbedroom_zpsevils7tb.jpg

The room will have the same grayish cork flooring we have in the basement and will be painted Benjamin Moore's Classic Gray with solid white trim. The room is divided from the nursery/office and bathroom/closet areas with two HUGE barn doors that are dark stained wood with black hardware. They will be mostly left open, so we'll have big wood statements on either wall. The built-in half-wall cabinets are going to be white like the trim in the room but with a wood top that matches the barn doors. We debated on beds for a while and ultimately decided we want a fun color, so we ordered this navy blue bed from Target after seeing it on the Emily Henderson blog (which I love!). And to pull in a bit more blue, we got this rug on a HUGE sale.

To start, at the end of the bed we'll have Travis's mom's cedar chest - but eventually we may replace it with a small loveseat or bench with shelving. But we still have a lot we need that I want to start picking out and trying!

First up, a ceiling fan! I'm really torn here, but am looking at something a bit more modern, like this one from West Elm. We don't need it to have a light, but if it has one that's great too - so we have lots of flexibility here! Any favorites you can link me in the comments?

 photo Screen Shot 2016-07-13 at 8.54.39 AM_zpstkwd8f9e.png

We need bedside tables, and I have no idea which color I want to pull in - wood to match the barn doors? Introduce a metal that we can carry throughout the room like gold? White to match the built-in cabinets? And should I match them on both sides, or let each one have its own personality

And what about throw pillows? I think we'll go solid white on bedding to keep it simple at first, but we have essentially unlimited options as far as pillow colors. My cousin introduced me to Studio McGee, and I LOVE their pillows, so maybe I'll pick a couple from there and then fill in with some cheaper ones?

Other things I'm keeping my eye out for include a plant or two for the corners, lamps for the bedside tables, and some airy curtains to hang on the sides of the three windows behind the bed. They'll have blackout blinds for nighttime, but I love the idea of some airy lightweight curtains there as well. If you have any favorite styles of ANY of these things, comment comment comment!

Summertime Favorites - July Edition

Summer is officially here (it really starts on July 5 in Seattle but it hasn't gotten quite nice enough yet, if you ask me!) and I wanted to highlight some of my recent favorites that I'm sure will be on rotation ALL.SUMMER.LONG! I'll be revisiting this in August, too - we'll see what sneaks into the list between now and then :)

 photo summer favorites 1_zps7davbky5.jpg

First up is a Stella & Dot piece - this beautiful white arc pendant. My sister actually bought it for me and it has become a favorite layering piece. White pants and white espadrilles will be on rotation a ton, and I love the idea of pairing it with a simple but impactful white necklace. Shop here for a chance to win some fun summertime white stud earrings:

If you follow me on snapchat you probably saw a few video snippets of me raving about my new favorite nut butter, Nuttzo. I got it at Costco but looks like you can also get it on Amazon! I love that they blended a bunch of nuts and seeds together to get the amazing flavor and crunch they did. Definitely give it a try if you're into that sort of thing.

I'm a big sunscreen person and have recently been trying to also take better care of my hair when it comes to heat and UV damage. This does that and also smells incredible - I highly recommend it!

I'm on the hunt for master bedroom furniture - it is the only room we are starting 100% from scratch on and want to have done around the same time the remodel is done. The hardest part is the ceiling fan (I'm serious!) and I think this one in copper penny will look good. Thoughts?? I know it is hard to know without seeing the rest of the look in the room - that post is coming soon though!

I lived in my birks all last summer, and this summer is no different. From a quick walk with the pup to a dressed down midi dress, I'm loving the ease of slipping them on! I have the classic Arizona in tan and am debating getting them in black!

What are you reaching for over and over so far this summer? Let me know in the comments!
